Youngest Players By League, August 2022

As the MLB and MiLB seasons head into their final months, we update the youngest players in every affiliated league on active rosters. Players on the injured list or any other non-active status are not included.

MAJOR LEAGUES

At the major league level, a couple of remarkable items stand out. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. remains the 10th youngest player in the American League. New Padres outfielder Juan Soto remains the 15th youngest player in the National League. The 10 National League hitters who are younger than him have combined for 509 hits in the majors. Soto has 570 hits himself.

TRIPLE-A

At the Triple-A level, the International League’s youngest players are a number of the best prospects in baseball. The youngest player in the Pacific Coast League, Kervin Pichardo, is a different case. Pichardo was traded to the Padres at the end of March. The shortstop/third baseman was promoted to Triple-A El Paso from Low-A Lake Elsinore in mid-July as a fill-in. He has hit .214/.347/.336 for his career and had played one game above Low-A before this recent promotion. He’s likely to head back to a more appropriate level when the Padres make other moves.

DOUBLE-A

Eury Perez is the youngest pitcher in Double-A. He is a full year younger than any other pitcher in Double-A and he is also younger than any pitcher in High-A.

Constructing The Ideal 2022 Futures Game Rosters

Josh Norris breaks down his ideal Futures Game rosters.

HIGH CLASS A

Brewers top prospect Jackson Chourio is nearly four years younger than the average Midwest League hitter and he is more than half a year younger than anyone else in High-A.

LOW CLASS A

With all the many moves in the Padres organization because of the trade deadline, Zavala was promoted to Lake Elsinore on Aug. 3. That makes him the youngest player in all of Low-A.

ROOKIE BALL

The difference in ages of Arizona and Florida Complex League hitters and pitchers is somewhat remarkable. At those complexes, the average hitter is nearly a year and a half younger than the average pitcher.
