Freddie Woodman close to Preston move with Newcastle eyeing goalkeeper rejig

Freddie Woodman is close to joining Preston North End, as Newcastle United begin to revamp their goalkeeping contingent.

The 25-year-old is set to undergo a medical in Lancashire ahead of signing a deal that is expected to become permanent, given he is about to enter the final year of his Newcastle contract.

Woodman, the son of former Newcastle goalkeeper coach Andy, has been on Tyneside since 2013 and has long been viewed as a future No 1. However, having made just four league appearances for Newcastle, all at the start of last season, he is keen for regular game-time elsewhere.

An Under-20 World Cup winner with England in 2017, Woodman also won the Golden Glove at that tournament, before receiving the same accolade in the Championship in 2020-21 during an impressive two-year stint at Swansea City.

But having started last season in goal for Newcastle after injury and illness kept Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow out, Woodman failed to make a league appearance for AFC Bournemouth during a six-month loan spell.

Although Bournemouth were among several Championship clubs to register an interest in Woodman, he has agreed the framework of a deal to join Preston.
