Parsippany-based Zoetis Inc. announced June 22 it completed its previously announced acquisition of Basepaws, a privately held pet care genetics company headquartered in Los Angeles. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Founded in 2017 by now-CEO Anna Skaya, Basepaws offers genetic screening tools for the early detection of a pet’s risk for disease, as well as individualized breed and health reports that can identify traits, biomarkers and potential hereditary conditions, according to the initial June 7 announcement. The statement also said Basepaws developed the world’s first at-home oral health test for cats.
The acquisition gives Zoetis access to Basepaws’ extensive feline genomic and oral microbiome databases, as well, which not only help detect traits and health conditions but, according to the company, are invaluable for future research and development projects.
Zoetis CEO Kristin Peck said in the June 22 statement that the company was “immediately drawn” to Skaya and her team’s passion for pets and the role that genetic testing and data analytics can have in advancing animal care – a purpose that drives us every day . ”
Skaya added in the acquisition announcement that the companies’ passions align – for science and for creating better and longer lives for pets – and that she believes the partnership will strengthen their goals.
