• Philosophical competition in building the metaverse
• Apple and Meta have different approaches
• Apple executives joke about Mark Zuckerberg’s vision
Facebook’s rebranding as Meta Platforms sparked real hype around the Metaverse, a three-dimensional interactive and immersive environment that Mark Zuckerberg envisioned would be accessible to people from all over the world on a variety of devices. However, the actual definitive functionality of this new technology has not yet been determined, as the development of the Metaverse is still in an early phase.

Even Meta has now acknowledged that much of what the company envisions for the Metaverse is about a decade away. This requires cross-sectoral collaboration between experts, scientists, civil society, governments and regulators to take the right steps together. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the Metaverse is supposed to be an “open” platform, which is why his company works with various partners such as Microsoft.
Apple may be going its own way
According to media reports, Apple is also working on the virtual universe, but has not yet launched any products. However, it is speculated that next year the iGroup will introduce an advanced, expensive headset that will be compatible with the iPhone and other Apple products. The Cupertino, California-based company probably wouldn’t follow Meta’s open approach, limiting itself solely to its own products and services.
During a WSJ interview, Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of global marketing, and Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software development, declined to comment on the rumors of its own combined AR and VR headset. But this isn’t surprising, after all, Apple keeps essentially a low profile about future products.
VR or AR?
The development of virtual worlds driven by Mark Zuckerberg devours huge sums of money. This, coupled with weak advertising activity, has recently led to a sharp fall in profits and is forcing the Meta Group to suffer its biggest job loss since its founding in 2004, according to the New York Times. Metaverse grew increasingly disillusioned and even skeptical. This is clearly visible in the price development of the Meta share, which investors have sent down.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has also expressed his reservations. For example, in September, the CEO said the average person doesn’t even know what the Metaverse is, so he wouldn’t use the word. He also believed that people should not be encouraged to live their entire lives in the virtual world. Instead of using virtual reality (VR) like Zuckerberg, Cook relies on augmented reality (AR). While the former places users in a completely digitally recreated world, the latter superimposes digital content on the human view of the real world.
More digs at Meta Platforms
Greg Joswiak and Craig Federighi also lashed out at Mark Zuckerberg’s company during the “WSJ” interview. When asked to finish “The Metaverse is…”, Greg Joswiak promptly added “…a word I’ll never use”. Federighi commented “Yes, I agree”.
These were clear digs of Zuckerberg’s vision for the future, after all, the company name was changed from Facebook to Meta Platforms to reflect the new company vision, which was to build the so-called Metaverse.
